A Brief History
- 1967: ISACA got its start when a small group of auditing professionals in Los Angeles, whose jobs were to audit controls in computer systems, sat down to discuss the need for a centralized source of information and guidance in the field.
- 1969: The group was incorporated in California as the EDP Auditors Association (EDPAA). No other organization addressed controls in the automated systems that were now critical to business.
- 1972: The first EDPAA International Conference was held in Santa Monica, California. A newsletter, The EDP Auditor, began publication. The second chapter was started in Chicago.
- 1974: Chapters were started in Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Salt Lake City Chapters.
- 1975: Detroit became Chapter #8.
- 1976: The first international Chapter, Mexico City, was founded. The EDP Auditor Journal, a technical journal that became today’s IS Audit and Control Journal began publication. The association formed an educational foundation to undertake large-scale research efforts to expand the knowledge and value of the IT governance and control field.
- 1978: The certification program was born. The first 3,000 EDP auditors were grandfathered into the program as CISAs based on their years and quality of professional experience.
- 1981: The first CISA certification exam was administered. There were now fifty chapters with Portland, Oregon, as #50.
- 1984: Due to the number of new chapters forming in Europe and the Middle East, Region 9 was activated.
- 1985: Region 10 in Asia became activated. The EDP Auditors Foundation (EDPAF) purchased the Computer Audit and Control and Security Conference (CACS) from Harold Weiss.
- 1986: Victoria, B.C., Canada became Chapter #100.
- 1989: The EDPAF issued its first two worldwide standards on information systems auditing.
- 1991: The first international president living outside North America, Deepak Saruup, was elected.
- 1995: The Association renamed itself the Information Systems Audit and Control Association. The Association had 14,000 members with about half living outside the U.S. Half that growth occurred since 1985.
